Incorporating Spa Services Into Your Practice

Dr. Michele Chartier~ DentaSpa
As a consultant and marketing director for EMDG, I am continuously analyzing our industry and the trends that would have a direct impact on design and function of the dental facility. Recently, I attended a Botox and Dermal fillers course in Miami, FL that opened my eyes to one of the biggest economic opportunities in dentistry. I was intrigued by a marketing campaign that focused on why dentists should be offering these services and why dentists are the best, most qualified clinicians to perform these services. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical at first; would our patients think we were just looking to make more money by jumping into this arena? So I decided to spend the weekend at a DentaSpa Seminar course and see what it was all about.
What I learned after 2 full days of didactic and hands-on training was impressive. Our dental training does in fact provide us the skills to diagnose and treat our patients using Botox and Dermal fillers in order to enhance and complete our cosmetic dental cases. Our extensive knowledge of head and neck anatomy allows us to safely and effectively treat the face with injectables. A whole new area of therapeutic treatment was presented by well credentialed trainers that armed me with confidence and enthusiasm to share this information with you. We can now non-invasively treat gummy smiles and TMJ using Botox. Juvederm can be safely injected to replace facial volume and completely enhance an aging smile thereby optimizing a cosmetic dental treatment plan.
As a dental/medical office design company we are seeing a rising demand in dental/medical spa business models. It makes great economic sense to offer services that our perfect patients are seeking out. Not only baby boomers are interested in these services, the 30 and 40 generation are looking to do Botox and lip enhancement procedures, and maybe the dental office is the perfect place to have these services rendered. I recently interviewed Ana Delgado, Program Director for DentaSpa Seminars and Dr. Michele Chartier, DDS a DentaSpa trainer about DentaSpa and this entire trend in dentistry. I think you will be intrigued by their comments:
Dr. Russo: How did you become involved with Botox and dermal fillers in the dental arena?
Ana: My passion for Botox, dermal fillers and overall facial aesthetics began in February 2006 when I started touring the country putting on courses specifically designed for dental practitioners. At the time, it wasnt quite as popular (and mainstream) as it is today. And its not just the growing demand for our courses that shows me this trend. Recently, I saw Regis and Kelly talk about how Botox and fillers in dentistry was the best news ever. Most current research shows that more than 15% of dental practitioners are now offering these treatments. There really is no practitioner more qualified than a dentist to provide Botox and filler injections. Dental practitioners have more training in oral and facial anatomy (both muscular and skeletal) than any other healthcare professional and are very comfortable giving injections. Over the last 5 years, I have been honored to be exposed to leaders in the industry who are the reason DentaSpa is such a successful company today. This contribution has allowed me to perfect a program that is highly endorsed by all of our alumni.
Dr. Russo: What would you say is the most obvious reason dentists should consider these treatments for their practice? What qualifies them to add these services to their clinic?
Ana: There are many benefits Botox and fillers add to both cosmetic and restorative dental treatments. By putting on 1-2 seminars a month, I often see that participants leave so pleasantly surprised at just how much can be done. However, to state the obvious, how often do dental practitioners provide patients with perfectly restored teeth framed by wrinkled lips and dropped corners of the mouth? The soft tissues around the smile are just as important as beautiful bright teeth to provide patients with a beautiful smile. Botox and filler treatments are a real natural and logical complement to other dental services.
Dr. Russo: Aside from extensive head and neck education, what are some other competitive advantages dentists have with Botox and dermal fillers?
Ana: According to Allergan research, less than 10% of people who can afford these services are doing them, but yet it is a billion dollar industry. In todays day it is all about convenience. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists are increasingly offering patients dental treatments in their med spas. Dentists too can offer this one-stop convenience by offering patients aesthetic treatments at their dental practices and dental spas. Often times, people who want to look better and have considered treatments wont leave the comfort of their daily routines to treat themselves to these popular treatments. Yet at their dentists office, they now can feel comfortable taking advantage of these high-demand services conveniently during other routine dental visits.
Dr. Russo: What do your Botox/filler patients most enjoy about you doing their treatments versus other specialties like a plastic surgeon or dermatologist?
Dr. Chartier: One advantage is that my patients already trust me with their care and so transitioning that trust to adjunct aesthetic treatments is quite natural. My patients who used to go to another (non dental) practice for injectables love that I can offer painless injections. As dentists, we can offer patients comfortable treatments due to our ability to deliver proper anesthetic to sensitive areas like the lips. But aside from this advantage, dentists are used to working in small spaces with close attention to details; a needed skill to be a great injector.
Dr. Russo: What is required for a dentist to perform these procedures from a legal perspective?
Ana: More than 90% of US states allow dentists to administer Botox for therapeutic treatments such as TMD, facial pain and Bruxism and more than 30 states allow its use for both therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. With proper training and insurance, dentists in permitted states can easily incorporate these profitable, high-demand services into their practice. Each dental course at DentaSpa offers the 16 CE training needed to get insurance to provide these services.
Dr. Russo: What is the economic impact of including injectables as a treatment option? Are these treatments profitable?
Ana: Imagine earning about $1,000 per hour net profit as a beginner injector, and then imagine earning $2,000 per hour net as an experienced injector. With facial injectables, you can enjoy a source of income with no billing, no insurance companies, and no lab costs. Patients pay in full for the service they received prior to leaving your office.
Dr. Russo: Give me a typical scenario for a Botox/Filler patient and what a dental practitioner would profit?
Ana: An average patient will require three areas of Botox in the upper third portion of the face and two syringes of filler, for facial wrinkles around the smile. Based on an average product cost factor of $250 for the Botox for these three areas and a procedure cost of $700, and a cost factor of $250 per syringe for filler and a procedure cost of $600/syringe, a net profit of $1,150 will result (total product cost was $750; total procedure cost was $1,900). These procedures should take a beginner injector approximately 45 min-1 hour to complete. An experienced injector could complete these procedures in 20-35 minutes.
Dr. Russo: How have your patients responded to these treatments? What are the benefits of offering these treatments in your dental office?
Dr. Chartier: Botox and dermal fillers really complement many of the services I offer in my practice, allowing me to offer patients alternatives for care and comprehensive treatments. This means a lot to me. Aside from mainstream cosmetic uses, Botox can be used to treat TMJ, bruxism and facial pain cases. Botox also serves as a minimally invasive alternative to surgically treating high lip line cases (gummy smiles). Botox can be used for denture patients who have trouble adjusting to new dentures and to retrain facial muscles for certain orthodontic cases.
Dr. Russo: Tell us about your course, its instructors and its goals..
Ana: We are proud to have perfected a winning formula for our Botox and filler courses. At DentaSpa, we offer many benefits that we get positive endorsements for every time we hold a seminar. I have to say, however, this reputation and 100% satisfaction rating did not happen overnight. I have been conducting Botox and dermal filler seminars for more than 5 years, specifically for dental practitioners, which is one of the benefits of our seminars. We offer dental tailored courses that build on the knowledge and experience that dentists already have, an example being dental blocks for painless injections. Another key factor is class size. Many course take 25, even 50 registrants, which is great for revenue but not for learning. Other highly-priced course companies do one-on-one trainings, which sounds ideal but a great deal of learning happens from small group brainstorming and seeing multiple patient treatment plans and procedures. We limit our 2-day 16-CE course to no more than 12-15 participants, which is a great class size for optimal learning and individualized attention. Our instructors are certified national trainers, each with more than 12 years of experience in both practice and teaching. In addition to teaching for DentaSpa, they are national speakers and clinical trainers for Allergans Botox and Juvderm. Our courses are sponsored by the International Academy of Facial Aesthetics; which is an organization that supports our alumni within the world of aesthetics after attending courses. And I must highlight that our approach is different. Our success depends on our participants success, as we barely do any marketing and run mainly on word-of-mouth and referrals. Our main goal is to make our alumni successful, ensuring they have the knowledge and support they need to offer these high-demand treatments immediately after completion of our program.
Ana: Who should consider taking this course?
Ana: The beautiful part about Botox and fillers is that there are so many uses (learned in the courses) that dental practitioners can incorporate and tailor to meet the needs of their practice. I have orthodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons, cosmetic dentists and all dental specialties attend the course. It is amazing to see how each practitioner takes these treatments and applies them to meet patient demand and the specific niche of their practice. Oral surgeons and dentists that perform surgery use fillers to restore facial volume to maximize patient satisfaction with cosmetic and restorative dental procedures. Orthodontists and dentists use Botox to help eliminate jaw pain due to growing bones and to help keep bottom teeth from relapse after orthodontic treatment. Orthodontists also use filler on young adults who wore braces for years. They get used to the extra lip support from braces and are concerned with what is perceived as lost volume. Dental Practitioners use Botox to help patients who suffer from gummy smiles, TMD and Bruxism. The amount of treatments, both cosmetic and restorative, are incredibly vast. Its quite remarkable and exciting to be a part of this industry. Our mission at DentaSpa is to continue to contribute to the growth of this new exciting realm of dentistry, both through support and education.
